College Consulting Philosophy Statement
  • As an Independent Counselor member, I uphold NACAC's Statement of Principles of Good Practice.
  • I understand my role as a consultant is to guide people in their educational pursuits using the best learning approach possible.
  • I will provide honest feedback in the form of positive praise and/or constructive suggestions to clients I serve in a manner beneficial to their overall learning and understanding of admissions practices and the world of higher education.
  • I will not guarantee admissions to any specific college, university, or program, nor will I write a client's personal statement or application for them.
  • I will provide accurate admissions information about colleges and programs, and guide students toward other resources if I do not know the answer.
  • I understand the ultimate goal is to assist people in discovering how they best learn. I will accomplish this by helping each person develop the skills needed to achieve their best educational or writing outcome.
  • I will keep current in undergraduate and graduate admissions practices, writing practices, creative writing trends, and overall learning methodologies. I will do this by visiting college campuses, talking with specific programs, reflecting on admissions news, and critically reading admissions books while maintaining my dedication to the pedagogy of writing/English.
  • I will demonstrate faith in each student's learning abilities understanding my primary goal is helping them discover and develop skills needed to reach their desired educational outcomes.
  • I will respect and be sensitive to students’ cultural background and personal value system; keeping in mind their personal dignity.
  • I recognize I will not have answers to every question asked. Therefore, I will seek assistance in finding answers to clients' questions and/or directing the student to “how” and “where” appropriate resources are for the information needed.
  • I will maintain accurate records of client sessions and keep information about all clients I work with confidential unless they grant me permission to share some or part of their story.
  • I will remain flexible to my approach to learning, respectful of the various learning styles and preferences.
  • I will not pursue or accept incentives or compensation from any college, university, or institution in exchange for placement or referrals.
  • I will maintain up-to-date free resources on higher education admissions in an effort to create a broader understanding of admissions and higher education for all.
